PAP Smear
A PAP smear, also known as a Papanicolaou test, is a screening procedure used to detect abnormal cervical cells and cervical cancer in women. During the test, a healthcare provider gently collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula, which are then examined under a microscope for any precancerous or cancerous changes.
The procedure is typically quick, taking only a few minutes, and may cause mild discomfort but is generally well-tolerated. PAP smears can also detect cellular changes caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer, and may identify infections or inflammation of the cervix.
